New Material in the House

Jebsen & Jessen Packaging is leading innovation in Malaysia’s automotive industry by successfully localising and applying the new Porous Expanded Polypropylene (PEPP) in a commercial car. The Mitsubishi ASX, a stylish SUV crossover vehicle, is the first in the country to feature enhanced sound insulation via an advanced silencer under its floor carpet. This contributes to a smoother, more pleasant driving experience.

According to JSP Foam Products, the Japanese supplier of raw PEPP, the advanced material was introduced as more automotive OEMs are demanding better sound insulation solutions. Compared to the industry-standard Expanded Polypropylene (EPP), PEPP has been found to be 30% more effective in blocking out external noise.

While EPP continues to be a popular choice as it is lightweight and cost effective, Jebsen & Jessen Packaging recognised the potential of PEPP in automotive component applications. For customer Mitsubishi, Jebsen & Jessen Packaging proposed a package solution comprising three PEPP and three EPP parts – all locally produced to the Japanese automaker’s stringent standards.

The localisation of foreign car components has been a growing trend in Malaysia in recent years. With its deep industry experience and technical expertise, Jebsen & Jebsen Packaging was confident that it could ride this trend. The team began working with JSP’s technical support team and Mitsubishi’s R&D team to develop and produce the six components for the Mitsubishi ASX model.

The process was a challenging one as the customer’s internal audit processes were extremely stringent. In fact, according to the brand’s quality assurance standards, rejection rate was pegged at just 0.002%. The Jebsen & Jessen Packaging team in Nilai was determined to meet Mitsubishi’s requirements, working tirelessly to refine and improve its solutions and eventually winning the customer’s nod of approval.

With this successful project, Jebsen & Jessen Packaging has proven that it has the capabilities to locally produce auto components that are on par with original parts from Japan. As the first solution provider in the market to offer PEPP, the team is confident that this success will lead to more business opportunities, particularly with other automotive OEMs in Malaysia.

This is truly a milestone project for us. We are proud to bring PEPP to the Malaysian market and create greater value for our customers by sharing our expertise and capabilities in localisation with them.” – Edmund Yeoh, General Manager, Jebsen & Jessen Packaging Malaysia.
